The Association of Evangelicals in Burundi (AEB) was honored to host former Communications Director for the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), Bruce Barron on the 19 October 2025, a key figure in its establishment. Often regarded as a “father” of the AEB. Barron’s contributions have left a lasting mark on the organization, and his visit is of paramount importance for staff, leaders, and the communities the AEB serve.

Bruce's connection with Burundi began when Edmund Gakiza, current AEB’s General Secretary, reached out to him with the vision of forming a national evangelical alliance. Responding with encouragement and guidance, Barron offered his expertise, helping shape the structure and vision of what would become the AEB.

In its first year, the AEB benefited greatly from Barron’s consulting on governance and organizational matters. He also provided vital networking support, connecting Gakiza with leaders of the Re-Forma pastor training program, which today is an active component of the AEB’s leadership development initiatives. These early contributions laid the foundation for the AEB’s growth and impact across Burundi.

Staff and leaders of the AEB welcomed the opportunity to learn from Barron’s experience, drawing inspiration from his decades of service in international evangelical work. His presence was not only a reminder of the AEB’s origins but also a source of encouragement as the organization continues to grow and expand its programs.

Key Workshops and Mentoring Sessions Led by Barron

Barron kept a busy and impactful schedule during his time in Burundi. He spent the first weekend in Musema, Kayanza province, leading sessions on building strong marriages and teaching prudent financial management. On his second Sunday, he preached at Gishingano Baptist Church and facilitated marriage discussions there and at Carmel du Christ, where nearly 150 people attended the three sessions. In addition to these workshops, Barron participated in a capacity-building session, addressed the AEB board, mentored alliance leaders, and provided professional guidance to communications director Landry Ndayikeje, as well as discussing financial management with treasurer Ephraim Ngendakuriyo. His sessions combined practical advice with spiritual insights, equipping attendees with tools to strengthen families, manage resources wisely, and contribute positively to their communities.

Reflecting on the visit, Gakiza remarked:

“Bruce Barron’s return to Burundi reminds us of the strong foundation on which the AEB was built. His guidance and mentorship have been invaluable, and his example continues to inspire us to serve with excellence and integrity.”

Bruce Barron commended the progress made by AEB, noting the alliance’s remarkable resilience, organization, and teamwork. “The way this all-volunteer organization operates in harmony is truly impressive,” Barron said during his concluding briefing with the AEB board. “Your accomplishments over just two years, achieved despite financial constraints, are outstanding.”
